1. WHAT IS UROFLOWMETRY?
Uroflowmetry is a simple non invasive computerised test to determine the urine flow - volume of urine passed, time taken to pass and speed of the flow.
2. HOW IS THIS TEST PERFORMED?
Uroflowmenty is performed by simply passing the urine into a funnel shaped flowmeter by either sitting or standing. Patients should get normal sensation to pass urine before they perform this test. Men should completely take down their paints and undergarments and freely pass urine. Women should sit on the flowmeter and spread their thighs and freely pass urine inside the funnel.
3. HOW DO I PREPARE FOR THE TEST?
There is no special preparation required for this test. The patient should get the normal sensation to pass urine before they do this test. This can be simply done by drinking about 500 ml of water an hour or two before the scheduled test. Note that excess water consumption leading to a strong urge to pass urine may alter the test results.
4. WHAT IS THE OPTIMAL VOLUME REQUIRED FOR A SATISFACTORY TEST?
Adults should pass bout 200 - 500 ml of urine and children about 200-300 ml. The test has to be repeated in case if the volume is less than the mentioned values. If in case one cannot hold urine for long at smaller volumes, then this information has to be passed on to the nurse so that the test can be tailored accordingly.
5. WHEN WILL I GET THE REPORT?
The report will be available immediately after the test.
